Introduction

Extensive research based on detailed analysis of many tutoring sessions has shown that there are tow main patterns in tutoring interaction.

First there is IRP which stands for Initiation-Reply Pattern and the second is EALP which stands for Explain-Active Listening Pattern.

There are two keys to effective use of tutoring patterns. The firs is knowing when and why you use each pattern. The second is knowing how and when to cause the tutee to take the lead and stay on track in each pattern.
