Steps # 5 - Set an Agenda

To accomplish any task, you must first identify what the task is (remember, we did that in step #2) and secondly, allocate time available. Once again, it is easy to fall into the trap of doing this yourself. Ask the tutee to do it.

Let's spend 10 minutes on the first problem and 20 minutes on the second problem.
Does 20 minutes sound good for the first section?
Well, we have 40 minutes, how should we use them?

Another problem some tutors have with this step is NOT allocating time at all. It is one of the keys to accomplishing a task, make sure time is allocated. Do keep in mind that sticking to an agenda in light of an overwhelming need to reallocate time is equally non-productive as not setting an agenda at all.

Set and follow an agenda but be flexible!

Step # 6 - Address the Task

Once you have gone through the first five steps, you and the tutee need to follow your learning agenda and conduct the business of tutoring. Keep in mind that the source of information is the course materials not your understanding of them. Help the tutee learn from the material.
